If you’re thinking about hair extensions for the first time, this guide covers everything you need to know before you spend a dollar. I’ve been installing and selling hair extensions in Australia since 2000, and the questions I hear most often are always the same. Here are the honest answers. For a broader quality and buying checklist, see our [Best Hair Extensions Australia buyer’s guide](/best-hair-extensions-australia/).

## Types of hair extensions: a beginner’s overview

**Clip-ins** are removable pieces for temporary wear. You apply and remove them at home, following placement and weight guidance. They can be a useful starting point when the natural hair can support the clips; they are not automatically suitable for every beginner.

**Tape, micro ring / I-Tip and weft extensions** require professional fitting, removal and maintenance. Compare the attachment, upkeep and suitability in our [fitted-method guide](/tape-vs-microbead-vs-weft-extensions-australia/). Choose according to your natural hair and routine rather than a claim that one method is universally best.

## What Do Hair Extensions Cost in Australia?

Short to Long clip-in sets cost $290–$410; the One Piece–Three Piece set is $350, and thickening pieces start at $90. Tape salon fitting costs $160 per 25g for either 20-inch or 22-inch hair. Micro-ring salon fitting uses 20-inch hair at $160 per 25g. Salon pricing includes hair, installation, cut and style; the total depends on the amount assessed for your hair. For a practical comparison of hair quality, pack weights and fitting costs, see our [best-value hair extensions guide](/best-value-hair-extensions/).

## Can extensions damage natural hair?

No method is risk-free. Weight, tension, placement, maintenance and removal all affect the supporting hair. An experienced fitting specialist should assess suitability and explain when to stop, adjust or postpone a fitting.

If you have unusual shedding, scalp irritation or unexplained thinning, seek medical advice first. See our [thinning-hair guide](/hair-extensions-thinning-hair-postpartum-menopause/) and [care checklist](/caring-for-premium-quailty-human-hair-extensions/).

## Beginner’s Checklist Before Your First Extensions

- Choose your method (clip-in for beginners, tape/microbead for everyday wear)
- Confirm the hair is 100% human hair with no silicone coating — our [silicone-free hair extensions guide](/silicone-free-hair-extensions-australia/) explains what to check.
- Get a proper colour match ([free online service here](/colour-matching-service/))
- Book a consultation with a specialist before committing to permanent methods
- Understand the maintenance commitment (permanent extensions need moving up every 6–10 weeks); read our [hair extension care and storage guide](/how-to-make-hair-extensions-last-longer/) for day-to-day advice.
- Buy a sulphate-free shampoo and loop brush before your extensions arrive

## FAQ: First-Time Extensions in Australia

### What’s the best first extension method for beginners in Australia?

Start with clip-in extensions. They let you experience the look and feel of extensions with removable wear. Appropriate weight, gentle application and removal, and taking them out before sleeping help limit tension on your natural hair. Once you know you love them, you can upgrade to tape or microbead for an everyday result. Our [clip-in range](/clip-in-hair-extensions/) includes full Short to Long sets from $290 and ships Australia-wide.

### How do I find a reputable hair extension specialist in Sydney?

Ask about experience with your chosen method, a portfolio of the stylist’s own work, consultation and removal processes, and ongoing support. Nicole Zerafa has specialised in extensions since 2000 and founded Original Diva in 2006. Appointments are at our private [Hunters Hill salon](/in-salon-services/).
